THE ISR PROGRAM: LESSON STRUCTURE
Students attend lessons 5 days a week, Monday-Friday.
Each lesson is a maximum of 10 minutes in length.
The program is completed once the student can complete the entire Self-Rescue®sequence unassisted and in clothes. Typically (4-7 weeks)
THE SELF RESCUE® SEQUENCE: WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN
Lessons for a 6-12 month old: focus on teaching your child to roll onto their back and float, rest and breathe, and be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives. This position is the safest for a young baby and can be maintained for long intervals of time.
YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN:
Trust with the Instructor. The first lesson is focused on getting to know your child and establishing a bond.
Breath holding. Lesson's will not progress until until your child can effectively hold their breath with their mouth closed.
They will learn to go from a side angle to a float in the water. Then a face down to face up in the water.
Float unassisted until help arrives
Complete the entire ISR Self Rescue®skill Rollback-to-Float, first in a swim suit, then testing out in full clothes and a normal diaper.
Lessons for children 1-6 years old focus on teaching the Swim-Float-Swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with a head down swimming posture; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they can reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued.
WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN?
Trust with me the Instructor. The first lesson is focused on getting to know your child and the best method to help them confidently learn.
Breath holding underwater with mouth closed. Lessons will not continue until your child has effective breath control.
Swim with a head down swimming posture
Rollback to Float and rest
Flip over to resume swimming until they reach the pool edge or until help arrives
Once they are fully skilled, they will practice ISR survival techniques fully clothed during lessons.
MAINTAINING SELF RESCUE®SKILLS
Just like with any sport, practice makes perfect. Swimming is a sensori-motor skill and must be maintained to keep these skills sharp. Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This developmental process represents improved strength, coordination, and a more finely tuned cognitive ability. Your child's survival swim skill need to grow along with their minds and bodies!
There are two ways to keep these skills sharp
MAINTENANCE LESSONS; once weekly OR BIWEEKLY
Maintenance lessons are designed to make sure your child's survival skills remain intact. If you are a family that spends much time at the lake and your children are frequently in life jackets (required by law), maintenance lessons help keep the head up posture from a life jacket from becoming a bad habit in the pool.
Refresher lessons: once per year
Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child's ISR Self-Rescue®skill development. It is important to note that children do not "forget" the skills learned with ISR lessons, but during the extended period of time away from the water your child will have developed mentally and physically. They need time for their new bodies to assimilate their skills.
Previous Swim-Float-Swim students take approximately 2 weeks for a refresher course
Previous Rollback-to-float students, refresher lessons will take approximately 3-4 weeks
